Back in Action are a small, family owned business with four stores selling back-friendly furniture and equipment, including beds, chairs, sofas, desks – and of course their famous Mobiliser bed.
Not come across them before? Well, if you’ve ever been to see me in clinic, then you’ve tried some BIA furniture. While you explained your issues, you were sitting on a Varier Actulum chair, while I listened and asked questions from my unlocked RH Logic. And if you’ve been on my treatment couch in the past couple of months, you’ll have rested your head on BIA’s own-brand ergonomic foam pillow – and my next Back in Action purchase is going to be a top of the range sit-stand desk from Moll.
I first “discovered” Back in Action in 2003 when, as a young Army physio based at Northwood HQ, a patient told me about “this amazing machine” – the Mobiliser. I got my CO’s permission to acquire one for the unit, and to study its effects, resulting in a fairly convincing quantitative report; and have been friends with the BIA family ever since.
I regularly recommend BIA to my patients and am in the process of creating an online home ergonomics course with their senior DSE assessor, the lovely Fiona Seath… which I’ll tell you more about, once we’ve finished it!!!
(Fiona heads up Back in Action’s commercial division, offering onsite or online tailored one-to-one workstation assessments, so if you feel your current office setup is holding you back, do drop her a line.)
Although I’m familiar with many of the products Back in Action have stocked for years, I try to visit their fabulous flagship showroom in Marylebone fairly regularly, so that I know if there are any new items that I ought to recommend.
However, even if I suggest any specific product to you, I’ll almost always suggest that you go into the shop and try it first, because there’s really no substitute for testing a variety of options and being shown exactly how to use the equipment. The Back in Action team are all experts, and you’re welcome to stop by any time (booking isn’t essential, but may be beneficial if you’re tight on time). I absolutely recommend doing this if you plan to buy anything adjustable, because the greatest kit in the world is only great for you if you know how to set it up and use it in the way that suits your body the best. A full seating assessment at Back in Action costs £50, but the charge is deductible from the cost of one their chairs, should you choose to purchase from them.
I also have a discount code for my patients’ use, that entitles you to £100 off their own back care mattress (which comes with a 60-night trial), a Stressless sofa or recliner and of course their best product, the Mobiliser; and/or £25 off an adult chair. So if I recommend that you go there, I’ll give you a discount card to validate the offers.
