Laptop neck? You need an online physio!

People who come to see me with neck symptoms are usually pretty unhappy – it’s a horrible area to be experiencing pain. In more minor cases, they may say they notice their symptoms just when they’re turning their head in one direction, or that they can’t look over their shoulder comfortably when they’re driving. In more complex cases, they may say their neck is sore all the time, that their head feels too heavy to hold up, that they have a constant ache at the base of their skull, or that they’re experiencing pins and needles or numbness down one arm.

Why do I get neck pain?

People who come to see me with neck symptoms are usually pretty unhappy – it’s a horrible area to be experiencing pain. In more minor cases, they may say they notice their symptoms just when they’re turning their head in one direction, or that they can’t look over their shoulder comfortably when they’re driving. We often hold a lot of stress in our neck/shoulder region, which is especially relevant during lockdown; and most of us are moving less and sitting more. Even worse, we’re spending more time sat slouched, working on laptops and forcing our necks forward, so that our back muscles have to work overtime to prevent us from faceplanting onto the keyboard!

Why Nell can help with neck pain

I’m Nell, a physiotherapist and former British Army Major. Over the last 20 years, I have helped thousands of people get better, even when it seemed like no one else could help. My success rate is directly tied to my treatment philosophy: helping you recover involves looking at your whole body, not just the bit that hurts. I can follow the clues and trace many problems back to their source and resolve them. The more information I have, the more precise I can be with treatment. And the more precise and targeted the treatment, the faster you start seeing improvements and relief.

Since the start of lockdown, I’ve been developing ways to assess and treat patients with neck pain online. It’s not the same as coming into clinic, but I can still do a lot, and have still helped lots of people to make a full recovery from their neck problems.

How will you help me?

Using encrypted video technology, I can observe how you use your whole body, directing you to make specific movements that can help us uncover the real source of your neck pain. If necessary, I can refer you for a scan or to see a consultant; but most of the time we can analyse the cause of your neck issue and treat it with bespoke, targeted physiotherapy – a combination of exercises and self-applied manual therapy that I can teach you during online treatment sessions.

While my central London clinic is closed, if specialist hands-on treatment is really necessary, and if we both agree that the benefits of physiotherapy outweigh the risks of coronavirus transmission, then I may be able to visit your home – but most of my neck pain patients are making a good recovery with online treatment alone.
