My back hurts

Your back pain treatment starts with a deep understanding of your unique needs

Low back pain is one of the most frequent issues that people experience – research suggests that 80% of people will experience back pain at one time or another. The trouble is that once you’ve started to have back problems, they very often become recurrent. Proper back pain treatment starts with learning the real causes.

I believe that’s because the lower back is really only designed to bend forwards and back, but it’s trapped between two areas that twist – your ribcage and your pelvis. And if one of those areas becomes twisted and stuck, then your lower back is often forced to move suboptimally. Over time, poor movement patterns become habits, and habits cause wear points and injury.

My job is to work out whether the problem is coming from your ribcage or pelvis (and if it is, what’s causing the ribcage or pelvis to be twisted?) or from your low back itself. Is it acute (in which case, I often have to treat the low back first) or can I go straight to the cause and treat that?

Each back problem has its own specific cause, and therefore the best way to treat each back may be completely different.

When I treat you, we’ll start off by discussing when your back hurts: all the time, just when you’re sitting down or doing yoga, or when you’re super stressed. I then look at your posture and your movement patterns throughout your whole body, especially with regard to the activity or posture that hurts you most, in order to work out where your problem is originating from. We can then begin back pain treatment.

Once we work out what’s going on, we can put together a treatment plan. The plan will be completely individual to you: based on whether your back is the cause of your problem or whether it’s compensating for a problem elsewhere in your body, on your own goals and priorities, your diary, and how much time you’re able to devote to your recovery.

Treatment goes on

(just not in clinic)

I’m sad to say that with the impending “London lockdown” I have no alternative but to close the doors to my new clinic as of Monday 23rd March. I will be constantly reviewing all government updates and will let you know as soon as anything changes.

The good news

The good news is that, although the treatment room has to close, this doesn’t mean that treatment has to stop.

It is really important all my patients do not lose momentum in their recoveries and I am glad to say I have a number of solutions to ensure I can carry on providing the best treatment possible:

  • Physiotherapy treatment: switching to home visits
  • Keeping in touch: daily group video calls
  • Online Training, Pilates and Yoga
  • Advice on how can you help yourself and stay healthy
