My knees hurt

Knee Pain Treatment London - I see a lot of knees in clinic, as they’re a really common area to injure

They also very frequently don’t respond to traditional knee pain treatment that just focuses on strengthening the quadriceps and stretching the hamstring muscles!

I believe that’s because the knee is essentially just a hinge joint designed to bend and straighten, but it’s trapped between two areas that twist – your hip and your foot. And if one of those areas becomes twisted and stuck, then your knee is often forced to move suboptimally. Over time, you start to put pressure through your knees in places that aren’t designed for it, and eventually you notice pain and stiffness. Equally, if you have an accident (a fall when skiing, or you get tackled when your foot is planted), the knee can often get forcibly twisted, damaging the ligaments or cartilage – the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is particularly prone to tearing when you twist your knee.

Limping also causes or perpetuates knee pain – we simply aren’t designed to walk on a bent knee, and when we do, it can irritate the cartilage, especially at the back of the kneecap; and this can further complicate a knee or ankle problem!

My job is to work out whether the problem is coming from your knee joint itself, or whether it’s trying to compensate for a problem somewhere else in your body. Common issues that the knee tries to compensate for are weak feet or hips.

Each knee problem has its own specific cause, and therefore the best knee pain treatment may be completely different for different people.

When I treat you, we’ll start off by discussing when your knee hurts: is it all the time, or when you try to go downstairs, or when you get up after sitting down for a while? Does it click or get stuck? Can you walk? I then look at your posture and your movement patterns throughout your whole body, especially with regard to the activity or posture that hurts you most, in order to work out where your problem is originating from. The we can work out the best treatment for your knee pain.

Treatment goes on

(but it's now online)

Due to the “London lockdown” I have had no alternative but to close the doors to my new clinic. I will be constantly reviewing all government updates and will let you know as soon as anything changes.

The good news

The good news is that, although the treatment room has had to close, this doesn’t mean that treatment has to stop.

It is really important all my patients do not lose momentum in their recoveries and I am glad to say I have a number of solutions to ensure I can carry on providing the best treatment possible:

  • Physiotherapy treatment: switching to online
  • Keeping in touch: email me!  I’m contacting my patients regularly
  • Online Training, Pilates and Yoga
  • Advice on how can you help yourself and stay healthy
